You know the feeling all too well.Â
You're sitting there, staring at a blank screen, and the cursor just keeps blinking back at you. It's like every good idea you've ever had has decided to go on holiday.Â
Trust me, I've been there. That overwhelming sense of 'where do I even begin?' can be a real creativity killer.
And it's not just about starting. It's the endless decisions that wear you down. Every word, every sentence feels like a massive decision. "Should I say this or that?" "Is this too long?"Â
Itâs exhausting, isn't it? You end up second-guessing yourself so much that the joy of creating becomes clouded by doubt and indecision.
â
Let's talk about the videos themselves.Â
You pour your heart and soul into them, but then you check the analytics â retention isn't where you want it to be.Â
Itâs gutting to see viewers drop off halfway through a video youâve spent hours, maybe days, crafting. It makes you question if itâs all worth it.
And that constant questioning chips away at your confidence.Â
You start to wonder, "Am I even cut out for this?"Â
I've had those moments of self-doubt, questioning my writing abilities, believing past scripts that went well were justâŠluck. It's a cycle that can really knock you off your game.
Not to mention the time that goes into it. If I don't really know what I'm doing, why am I putting so many hours into this?
It's not just about the time lost; it's the frustration that itâs not being used effectively. It's a drain on your energy and your creative spirit.
Iâve lived through all of this â the frustration, the doubt, the endless rewrites. It's a tough gig, and it can really test your passion for content creation.Â
But what if I told you it doesnât have to be this way? There's a light at the end of this bloody gloomy tunnel.Â
I believe that being a good scriptwriter isnât just a case of needing to muscle through creative blocks every time you want to sit down and write. In fact, itâs closer to the opposite:
ââ
And itâs not that the best of the best live in a constant state of inspiration - they just have a manual theyâre following each time they sit down to write.Â
That's where this Playbook steps in â to transform the way you write for YouTube. â
Whether you're a budding YouTuber or a seasoned scriptwriter, the struggle with the scriptwriting process is real. But what if it could be... simpler?
This Playbook isn't just a collection of tips and tricks. It's a comprehensive journey through the art and science of writing an engaging YouTube video script.â

Choose your scriptwriting format from the updated templates Iâve created (now available in Notion, Docs and Sheets).

This Playbook is your roadmap from overwhelming confusion to confident, systemised scriptwriting.Â
It's not just about writing better scripts; it's about changing the way you approach content creation on YouTube.Â
Ready to make that leap?
Over the last several years, Iâve somehow managed to work my way from sitting in a call centre to sitting on calls with some of the best and brightest creators on YouTube.Â
But it wasnât easy (and definitely wasnât always fun).Â
When I started scriptwriting, my workflow involved long nights, countless revisions, and taking a mental battering from every script I penned.Â
The result was satisfying⊠but the process of getting there was exhausting.
Thatâs because YouTube isnât just a platform; itâs a dynamic, ever-evolving world ruled by new, innovative and unbelievably creative minds. Which is awesome if youâre just there to watch some good videos, but a nightmare if youâre trying to sharpen your skills.Â
â
Too many people believe that being a good scriptwriter means keeping up with every new popular video trend. But in reality, writing something incredible isnât a case of understanding whatâs trending - itâs about understanding attention and how we can make our ideas and stories engaging, no matter what shape the story takes.Â
Yes, packaging is important, but once theyâre IN your story⊠you need to make sure they STAY IN and COME BACK.
The only way to improve your chances of both of those things is to understand the nuts and bolts of why videos work (or donât).
Learning how to write better scripts is the best way to gain increased creative control over your output.
Most people think this is too hard, or too time-consuming.
And most of them arenât wrong - this took me years to figure out. Years of working with the best and brightest on the platform and suffering through those long nights.
YTSP includes a full stack of additional features and resources to make scriptwriting feel as effortless as possible.
Use my go-to script templates and audience analysis tools, set up to be adaptable to your unique style. Keep track of script progress using the YTSP Script Engine. Use my scriptwriting template to streamline the writing process (now available in Notion, Docs and Excel). Map out your audience avatar with an ultra-handy template to help you create more compelling content, faster.
Go beyond the theory and put your newfound scriptwriting understanding into practice with functional exercises and bona fide case studies. Consolidate your knowledge about hook writing, video structure and more - then apply it to your own script to amplify viewer retention.
"Should I cut this? Does my audience care? Am I rambling?" Trimming your script down can be exhausting. Simplify the editing process with series of âtrim testsâ designed to ensure a highly-optimised script where every sentence deserves to be there. Sentence passed the test? Keep it. Sentence failed the test? Bye bye. Ensure every sentence has purpose to take the audience on the intended journey from A â B.
Move past the decision fatigue and over-thinking that accompanies the scriptwriting process with a host of meaty, easy-to-use cheatsheets. Crafted in response to overwhelming demand from YTSP V1, these cheatsheets gather a tonne of real-world examples that you can literally just steal from. From hooks and curiosity gaps to objection-busting and sponsor integrations, there are 100+ examples from high-performing videos.
YTSPâs scriptwriting frameworks give you a reliable âformulaâ to write almost any part of your script. This isnât about taking the creativity out of YouTube. Itâs about giving you a bunch of structural âfallbacksâ to help you write (even when youâre struggling).
So when I say âfigured outâ, what do I actually mean?Â
Well, as James Clear says, âyou do not rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems.â
And I realised that, ultimately, the hardest part of scriptwriting wasnât understanding the nuts and bolts of how stories worked or how to capture peopleâs attention. It was forcing myself to begin this process from scratch, staring at a blank page, every time I wanted to write a script.Â
So the big epiphany I had that lit the spark for the YTSP was that there were things I could do that would make creativity and crafting a compelling, engaging script effortless every time.Â
And it wasnât about working harder. It wasnât about routinely unlocking some hyper-focused state where I had a thousand good ideas at my fingertips every time I sat down to write.
It was about creating systems that did this work for me.Â
And thatâs what Iâm going to share with you. But more on that later.
Hey! đ I'm George Blackman, and my journey to becoming a YouTube scriptwriting expert took a bunch of commitment, study and analysis - and a bit of serendipity. Here's a little about me and how I became a go-to person for YouTube scriptwriting:
I went from working in a call centre three years ago to writing scripts for Ali Abdaal, who at the time had 3m subscribers.
From over 100+ candidates, I got one of four writer positions.
The videos I wrote averaged over 1m views each.
I went on to write for creators like Mike Shake, Noah Kagan and Creator Booth, and to work with the team of writers behind creators like Thomas Frank.Â
Iâve worked with real estate agents, laser eye surgeons and even child prodigy violinists to kickstart/optimise how they write their videos, and to create a sales funnel for their businesses.Â
Iâve been featured in Business Insider and interviewed on Creator Science.Â
Iâve spent months studying dozens of retention graphs across 40+ niches and shared all my findings for free.
And while Iâm still learning, I do feel confident saying that Iâve spent more time thinking about scriptwriting on YouTube than almost anyone else.
Not sure how many cool points that gets me, though.Â
And when I started sharing what Iâd learned, I got responses like this:

The principles in YTSP are designed to apply to as many niches as possible. We have students in a ton of niches, e.g. music tuition, health and fitness, entertainment, genealogy, NBA, business, meditation, real estate, documentary, and many more. However, there is no âfix-allâ for YouTube, and some lessons may be less applicable than others.
The principles in YTSP are designed to apply to as many niches as possible. Iâve worked with both types of channel, and the course contains plenty of case studies, examples and exercises for both. Having said that, YTSP probably leans slightly towards educational creators on balance.
Yes, but it is not the focus. Module 2 spends one lesson covering ideation and packaging using the same system I use with clients and students. Thereâs even a small bonus video on how I edit thumbnails as a non-designer. However, these are not my areas of expertise. Many other YouTube professionals can provide more detailed tuition on ideation and packaging. I suggest not investing in YTSP if this is the area you need the most help with.
No, YTSP has no information about cameras, microphones, or anything to do with physical setup. It is designed to help you improve your scriptwriting.
In a nutshell: no. There is obviously an intersection between writing and editing a YouTube video, and certain aspects of scriptwriting (e.g. choosing which B-Roll or music the editor should use) might feel like weâre discussing editing. But these discussions are ultimately rooted in scriptwriting, not editing.
I want this to be an absolute no-brainer for you - an investment in the future of your channel that you can make without batting an eye.
â
So if for any reason within the first 30 days of signing up you donât think that YTSP is for you, you can just send me an email and Iâll give you 100% of your money back, no questions asked.Â
Are you ready to begin your scriptwriting transformation?Â
I sure hope so. Iâm super excited to get started.
